Setting the Advertisement Interval
TheVRRPmasterroutersendsperiodicadvertisementmessagestolettheotherroutersknowthat
themasterisupandrunning.Bydefault,advertisementmessagesaresentonceeachsecond.
UsethefollowingcommandinrouterconfigurationmodetochangetheVRRPadvertisement
interval:
advertise-interval vlan vlan-id vrid interval
Validintervalvaluesarefrom1to255seconds.
Setting a Critical IP Address
InVRRP,acriticalIPaddressdefinesaninterface—inadditiontotheinterfacebetweenhostsand
afirst‐hoprouter—thatwillpreventthemasterrouterfromfunctioningproperlyiftheinterface
weretofail.Forexample,anIPaddressofaninterfaceconnectingamasterrouterto
arouter
configuredforinternetaccesswouldbeconsideredacriticalIPaddressforVRRProuting.
UsethefollowingcommandinrouterconfigurationmodetosetacriticalIPaddressforVRRP
routing:
critical-ip vlan vlan-id vrid ip-address
Setting Pre-empt Mode
Whenamasterroutergoesdown,thebackupwiththehighestprioritytakesovertheIPaddresses
associatedwiththemaster.Bydefault,whentheoriginalmastercomesbackupagain,ittakes
overfromthebackuprouterthatassumeditsroleasmaster.WhenaVRRProuterdoesthis,it
is
saidtobeinpre‐emptmode.Pre‐emptmodeisenabledbydefaultontheMatrixDFESeriesor
N‐SAdevice.YoucanpreventaVRRProuterfromtakingoverfromalower‐prioritymasterby
disablingpre‐emptmode.
Usethefollowingcommandinrouterconfiguration
modetodisablepre‐emptmode.Thiswill
preventabackuprouterfromtakingoverasmasterfromamasterrouterthathasalowerpriority:
no preempt vlan-id vrid
Note: If a VRRP configured IP address owner is available, it will always take over as the master
router—regardless of whether pre-empt mode is on or off.
