About Server Versus Application Severity Levels
ThedefaultSyslogconfigurationallowsclientapplicationstogeneratemessagesonaseverity
levelof6andtheSyslogservertologmessagesfromclientsataseveritylevelof8.Thismeansthat
allenabledserverswillacceptmessagesfromallloggingapplicationsgeneratedforerror
conditionsatlevels6,
7and8.Youcanusetheproceduresdescribedinthischaptertochange
theseparameters,modifyingtheloggingbehaviorbetweenoneormoreclientapplicationsand
oneormoreservers.
Enabling Syslog Server(s)
UsethefollowingcommandstoenableSyslogononeormoreserversandverifythe
configuration:
1. EnableSyslogonaserverIP:
set logging server index ip-addr ip-addr state enable
Indexisavaluefrom1to8thatspecifiestheservertableindexnumberforthisserver.
2. (Optional)Verifytheserverconfiguration:
show logging server [index]
Ifindexisnotspecified,informationforallconfiguredSyslogserverswillbedisplayed.
Example
ThissampleoutputfromtheshowloggingservercommandshowsthatSysloghasbeen
enabledontwoservers.TheseserversareusingthedefaultUDPport514toreceivemessages
fromclientsandareconfiguredtologmessagesfromthelocal1andlocal2facilities,
respectively.Loggingseverityonbothserversis
setat5,whichwillrecordwarning
conditions.Thesesettingscanbe changedonaper‐serverbasis,orforallserversusingthe
commandsdescribedinthenextsection.
Modifying Syslog Server Defaults
Unlessotherwisespecified,serversenabledforSyslogwillautomaticallyadoptfactorydefault
settingsforfacilitynameanddescription,messageseveritylevel,andUDPportnumber.Usethe
followingcommandstochangethesesettingseitherduringorafterenablinganewserver.
Displaying system logging defaults
Todisplaysystemloggingdefaults,oralllogginginformation,includingdefaults:
show logging {default|all}
