Showschassisslots1through5populatedwithfirstandsecondgenerationmodules(6x1xxand
6x2xx).Ifa6x1xxor6x2xxseriesmoduleisinstalledinslot6or7,itwilloperateinstandalone
mode(nobackplaneconnectivity).Likethe6x3xxmodules,the6x1xxand6x2xxmodulesoperate
asindividual
moduleswithseparateIPaddresses,andeachoneisconfiguredusingLocal
Management.
Rule:The6x1xxand6x2xxmodulescancommunicatewitheachotherwhentheyareinstalledin
chassisslots1through5intheMatrix E7chassis.Ifinstalledinslot6or7,theyoperatein
standalonemode.
Example 4 (Figure 3-1, D)
Showschassisslots1through5populatedwithamixof6x1xx,6x2xx,and6x3xxmodulesand
onlythirdgenerationmodulesinslots6and7.
Inthismodulearrangement,the6x3xxmoduleprovidesaproxybridge,whichenablesthe6x1xx
and6x2xxmodulestocommunicatewith6x3xxmodulesinslot
6or7.Ifmorethanone6x3xx
moduleisinstalledinslots1to5,themoduleinthelowestnumberedslotperformstheproxy
functionforslots6and7.Therefore,ifa6x3xxmoduleisalreadyperformingtheproxyfunction,
andanother6x3xxmoduleisinsertedintoa
lowernumberedslot,connectivitywillbetemporarily
interrupted,asthenewboardtakesovertheproxyfunction.Whena6x3xxmoduleinalower
numberedslotisremoved,andthereisa6x3xxmoduleinahighernumberedslot,communication
isnotinterrupted.
ForLocalManagement,pluggingtheLocalManagementconnection
intothe6x3xxmoduleswill
allowmanagementconnectionstoall6x1xx,6x2xx,and6x3xxmodules.IftheLocalManagement
connectionistoa6x1xxor6x2xxboard,onlythemodulesinthefirstfiveslotswillberecognized
bythemanagementclient.
Rule:Theremustbeatleastone6x3xxmodule
inslots1through5toenablecommunications
betweenthe6x1xx,6x2xx,and6x3xxmodules.

Showschassisslots1and5populatedwith6x1xx,6x2xxmodules,respectively;slots2through4
withDFE‐Platinummoduleswithoutabridgingmodule;andslots6and7with6x3xxmodules.
Inthismodulearrangement,the6x1xxand6x2xxmodulesinslots1and5canonlycommunicate
witheach
other,becausethereisno6x3xxmoduleinoneofthefirstfiveslotstoserveastheproxy
bridgetocommunicatewiththe6x3xxmodulesinslots6and7.The7x4xxxDFE‐Platinum
modulesinslots2,3,and4willoperateunderoneIPaddress.Sincethere
isnobridgingmodule
(7H4382‐25,7H4382‐49,7H4383‐49,or7H4385‐49),theDFE‐Platinummoduleswillnot
communicatewithanyothermodulesinthechassis.
Rule:Inthisexample,theremustbeatleastone6x3xxseriesmodule,andabridgingmodule

7H4385‐49)inslots1through5toenablecommunications
betweenallgenerationsofmodulesinthechassis.

describedinExample5.Theonlydifferenceisthatabridgingmoduleisinstalledinslot2,
enablingallmodulestocommunicatewitheachother.
Rule:
Inthisexample,theModelNumberservesasboththeFTM1‐to‐FTM2bridgeandthefive‐
to‐sevenslotproxybridge.The6x3xxdoesnotserveasaproxybridgeinthisconfiguration
becausetheModelNumberisinaslotwithalowernumber.Youcanusethe7H4382
‐25,
7H4382‐49,7H4383‐49,or7H4385‐49asabridgingmoduledependingontheneed.
